About
As a rather mature programmer, there is a lot of sitting, inside, staring into a screen. Not very healthy.
So to motivate myself to get out and about on a regular basis, I got my self a decent camera, and started doing long walks and taking photos on a semi-regular basis. At least thrice a week.
Yes, I could have gotten a dog - problem is - I prefer cats 😺
Mostly do street photography, snapping photos of what catches my eye.
Editing
I use Darktable for all my edits and photo-organization. Not that I do much in editing. I tend to do the bare minimum and keep the photos as “real” as possible. Some rotation to get the vertical and/or horizontal level. Cropping where a photo is a bit busy. Finally, to make the colours pop a bit more, I adjust a bit of contrast, temperature and LUTs. Sometimes some minor touch up to get rid of dust-spots, but not often as I keep the gear pretty clean.
Gear
Cameras:
- Canon EOS R7
- Canon EOS R100
- OM System TG-7 25-100mm F2-4.9
RF mount lenses:
- TTArtisan 10mm F2 (MF)
Great for Architecture and Interiors. Very wide, but rectilinear so very little if any barrel and fisheye effect.
- Canon 16mm F2.8 (AF)
The widest I’ll go for street photos - more of a landscape lens really.
- TTArtisan 23mm F1.4 (MF)
My favourite manual lens. Great for hip shooting and quick reaction shots. Just zone focus out to 1.5 meters at F5.6 aperture, and you’re set!
- TTArtisan 35mm F0.95 (MF)
The goto lens for night shots. May be a bit soft wide open - certainly full of “character”. But step down to F1.4 to F2 and it behaves very nicely.
- Canon 50mm F1.8 (AF)
A very versatile little lightweight lens. Great for both general street-photos and situations where a good deal of background blur is called for. Behaves very nicely with little light.
- TTArtisan 250mm F5.6 (MF)
For those days where I’m chasing unique pictures - as it is a reflex mirror lens it produces some very visually pleasing donut blurries. Having a long focal length, it do demand IBIS to be able to focus properly and to negate camera shake at reasonable shutter speeds.
- Tamron 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 (AF)
The do it everything lens. From close up Macro to zooming in super tight to catch birds in flight. Only restriction is the variable aperture that limit it to daytime use. My one lens that don’t mind a bit of rain.
Mind you, when going for a walkabout, I mount the lens I am in the mood for, and won’t carry around any others. Puts restrictions on what I can shoot - a bit of restraint is a good thing!
Oh, and the R7 and R100 both being a APS-C sensor camera - multiply the Focal Length of the lenses by 1.6 for the Full Frame equivalent. The petite size of the camera bodies and the smaller lighter lenses make for a very good Street Photo combo.
The TG-7 is my Everyday Camera. If out and about doing other stuff it comes with me, and being water-tight rain is no hinderance. From time to time I even take it out for dedicated photowalks. Nobody bats an eye when I frame up with the little compact camera - just another tourist. With the R100 or the R7, one is instantly flagged as a photographer.
